The project will implement digital analysis and visualisation tools to analyse and present data and information in meaningful ways for key stakeholders within the Marine Institute and key partner agencies. It will enable services which support cross-team analysis and understanding, leading to efficient and collaborative evidence-based decision making, based on a common process and toolset, leading to high-quality, reproducible and transparent information.

As identified, the aquaculture industry is an important economic activity on all coasts of Ireland. The inshore aquaculture industry produces a variety of shellfish as well as salmon and trout. A significant proportion of the activity occurs within, or proximate to, Natura 2000 sites which are environmentally designated areas under the EU Habitats and Birds Directives.

The aim of this project is to build national capacity in climate modelling of the marine domain with a focus on Ireland’s Exclusive Economic Zone and marine activities therein. This project will ensure that up-to-date marine climate and ecosystem model outputs are available to help fulfil national and European climate policies.

Ireland has obligations under the EU’ Marine Strategy Framework Directive to deliver food web indicators under Descriptor 4. The collection of continuous plankton data on a consistent annual basis will feed into the data needs for informing on how plankton abundance and distribution may be changing under the pressures of global climate and ocean change.

The project will implement best practice data governance, data signposting and data access services for relevant datasets enabling Irish marine data to be a leading example in the implementation of the Public Sector Information Directive and expanding the coordination and processing of marine data nationally and the integration and availability of those data via national and international portals.

To support a broader quality-controlled data and evidence base for national marine programmes the ability to process data efficiently is needed using new technical capabilities and approaches. This project will develop the use of new tools and processes to automate parts of the data processing pipeline allows for much greater efficiency, with optimise data processes allowing scientists to be redirected to higher value adding activities.

There is a need for a holistic ecosystem based tool for defining boundaries for aquaculture development within a waterbody, so that it’s ecosystem function and the biodiversity it supports can be sustainably managed. ECC modelling has significant potential to meet this need.
Project Status:
Scientific expertise to provide the Marine Institute a facility to better measure and manage the risks to conservation features from aquaculture and fisheries activities and provide robust scientific advice to DAFM in a timely fashion.

Ireland has a programme of measures to implement the Habitats and Birds Directives in marine coastal SACs and SPAs in respect to assessing and mitigating effects of fisheries and aquaculture on these sites. This involves assessment of potential effects of fisheries and aquaculture on marine habitats and species followed by implementation of measures to mitigate risk.
Project Status:
The main objective of this project is to collect the scientific evidence base needed to reconcile sustainable fisheries objectives with nature conservation objectives. The project aims to; extend benthic habitat mapping knowledge beyond Irish coastal waters and offshore reef habitat, identify VME habitats (Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem), improve MSFD assessments on seabed integrity (GES D6), support Marine Spatial Planning, underpin future MPA designations and nature restoration efforts, enable Offshore Renewable Energy development, and underpin Strategic Environmental Assessments.
Project Status:
This project aims to evaluate, reduce and eliminate interactions with endangered and protected species and habitats in the project area and will involve key stakeholders directly in that process.
Project Status:
The aim of this project is to ensure that the competence is nationally available to reliably undertake reference-quality measurements of key Essential Ocean Variables, underpinning climate/oceanographic observation programmes. A key focus will be on inorganic carbon system measurements required for quantifying climate ocean CO2 fluxes and budgets and to measure ocean acidification.

This project will monitor the recovery of exploited deep-water species following the decline of the deep-water fisheries in Irish waters.

Outreach through a variety of media including webpage, brochures, presentations, storymaps and videos to disseminate Marine Biodiversity Scheme and projects to a variety of audiences. This includes policy makers, stakeholders, scientists and the general public.
Project Status:
The project will continue to deploy, manage and maintain vessel monitoring systems (iVMS) on inshore fishing vessels to provide data on location of fishing and to enable estimation of fishing effort.

The aim of this project is to enhance Ireland’s capacity in the use of remote sensing imagery from satellites. This project will ensure that up-to-date marine climate and ecosystem model outputs are available to help fulfil national and European climate policies.

All native oyster beds are within Natura 2000 sites and there are specific conservation objectives for oyster habitat (national need and implementation of Habitats Directive). The project will support the development of management plans, measures and restorative actions for oyster beds in these areas.
