Building on data managed through the Marine Institute’s internationally accredited Data Management Quality Management Framework this project will implement an operational analytics framework to support the development of high-quality and well managed information products and services.
The framework will underpin how data from a range of disciplines and programmes will feed into marine environmental reporting, marine data products, decision support tools, and support awareness and understanding of our marine environment through enhanced data visualisation capabilities.
The project will implement digital analysis and visualisation tools to analyse and present data and information in meaningful ways for key stakeholders within the Marine Institute and key partner agencies. It will enable services which support cross-team analysis and understanding, leading to efficient and collaborative evidence-based decision making, based on a common process and toolset, leading to high-quality, reproducible and transparent information.
This project will:
- Develop an operational data analytics framework to facilitate the collaborative development and quality assurance of information and data products and services for marine decision support and management. This will be applied across teams and programmes including for MSP, MSFD, DCF, ocean renewable energy and climate use cases, aquaculture and food safety. The framework will include a set of managed tools and standardised data views, with a well-defined and repeatable quality assurance process, ensuring high-quality, reproducible and transparent outputs.
- Implement operational software and related services for data analysis and visualisation which can support improved access to data and information products for fisheries, aquaculture and marine management, and enable more responsive and efficient development of new information products for programmes such as MSP, MSFD, DCF, ocean renewable energy and/or climate use cases, aquaculture and food safety.
- Implement an extension to the Data Management QMF to support quality assurance of the resulting data products and services, for collaborative development of reproducible information products and services e.g. for aquaculture and food safety data, for MSP data products, etc.
- Undertake workshops to support scientists to apply the tools and process when developing new information products. The resulting outputs will support the development of information products for fisheries and aquaculture management, for marine planning and environmental reporting, and for marine climate and renewable ocean energy uses.
This project will run for 6 years from 2022 to 2027
- The analytics framework will enable high-quality information and data products and services to be more readily developed with reusable and reproducible processes, to meet the needs of the different stakeholder groups to support programmes such as DCF, MSP, MSFD, aquaculture management and food safety monitoring, climate modeling and ocean renewable energy development.
- The Marine Institute's information products and services will be delivered through a consistent managed framework, enabling collaborative development of new information products and services. These can be developed with broader input across teams and disciplines.
- The resulting products and services can be made more readily available for cross-disciplinary teams, and publicly as required, supporting the delivery of national and international programmes including for MSP, MSFD, DCF, aquaculture management and licensing, including to support the AQUAMIS services, food safety monitoring, climate modeling and ocean renewable energy development.

This project will deliver:
- An operational data analytics framework enabling collaborative mapping, dashboards, and reporting service development, with thematic services to support the development of information products for key MSP, MSFD, DCF, aquaculture and food safety, ocean renewable energy and/or climate use cases.
- Extended data process quality management to provide quality-assured, reproducible and transparent information and data products and services. The process will include use of data and code version management tools and services.
- At least three new analytics services implemented to support MSP, MSFD, WFD, aquaculture and food safety, climate or renewable ocean energy.
- Training for users of the framework including for the quality process, data and toolset).
