This report presents the results of a four-year monitoring programme (2021-2024) examining catch, bycatch and fishing effort in the southwest Ireland crayfish (Palinurus elephas) tangle net fishery. Using a combination of fisher self-reporting, scientific observer coverage and inshore Vessel Monitoring Systems (iVMS), the study assessed crayfish catches, stock trends and fishery economics while also quantifying interactions with protected and endangered species. The findings highlight increasing crayfish landings and fishing effort, but also significant bycatch of grey seals, Angel Shark, Flapper Skate and other vulnerable elasmobranch species. The report provides essential evidence to support sustainable crayfish management, reduce impacts on protected wildlife, and inform the transition towards lower-impact fishing methods in Ireland's southwest coastal waters.
